Tanager I

A full structural remodel that stripped a 1970s French-style house to its framing and rebuilt it as a single-level contemporary home wrapped by an infinity pool.

This residence is a remodel of an existing home designed in the French style in the 1970s — and in very bad shape. The existing house was stripped down to its framing and rebuilt in a contemporary style to take full advantage of the magnificent views over Los Angeles.

Central to the concept was relocating the pool: the original sat in the middle of the yard, and pushing a new pool to the extremities of the lot produced a much larger outdoor living space wrapped by the house on one side and the infinity edge on the other. Ceiling heights were raised in the main living areas and the plan opened up to visually connect the spaces, with transparent sliding door systems dissolving the line between interior and view.

The house is laid out on one level — something of a rarity in the Hollywood Hills — with three bedrooms, living, dining, kitchen and family rooms, a small screening room, and a gym. The material palette is deliberately simple: white limestone, brushed aluminum, and stainless steel, warmed by oak walls and cabinetry.

A down-to-the-studs structural remodel on a hillside lot is renovation work at its most demanding — exactly the intersection of engineering and construction where Interconneckt operates.
